An economical solution ideal for well or lake water, CottagePure is a compact five-stage drinking water purification system designed specifically for water that may be microbiologically unsafe. CottagePure utilizes sediment, carbon block and one micron filtration combined with ultraviolet germicidal sterilization.
CottagePure is designed for water that is not treated by a municipal water treatment plant using chlorine to kill microorganisms (although this unit will remove chlorine). The CottagePure is NOT a whole house (point of entry) system, however — it is a point of use drinking water system designed to be installed under a kitchen counter.
The CottagePure includes five filtering stages combined in a three-chamber housing. This unit is a complete system including all the components required for a professional installation and sufficient extra filters that should provide one to two years of service before additional filters are required. This unit produces great tasting, contaminant and microorganism-free drinking water. In addition to killing microorganisms, the CottagePure system removes particulate matter down to half a micron and destroys over 99% of bacteria and viruses — purifying water without the use of harmful chemicals.
The CottagePure installs under the sink and comes with a long reach chrome faucet and all the necessary installation hardware. It includes four advanced filters with five discreet filter technologies housed in a triple 10″ under-counter housing, with a horizontally mounted UV-C sterilization filter on top (which requires AC power to run).
STAGE 1: 30 Micron Dirt/Rust/Sediment Filter
Installed in the left filter container, the spun polypropylene microfiber dirt, rust and sediment filter removes particles 30 microns or larger (the majority of particles in lake and untreated water), extending the life of the 1 micron filter in Stage 2. This filter should be changed when water pressure significantly drops.
STAGE 2: 1 Micron Pleated Sediment
The filter installed in the middle container is a one micron pleated filter, to trap particles 1 microns or larger. Particulate matter smaller than 1 micron will be captured by the third (.5 micron) filter. If water pressure is still low after replacing the 30 micron filter, this filter should be replaced, as well.
STAGE 3 & 4 – 0.5 Micron Carbon Filter
The third filter, installed in the right container, is a 2-in-1 (2 stages in one filter component) .5 micron powdered carbon filter designed to remove a wide range of contaminants. A unique feature of this filter is that it is flow-restricted to 2.3 litres per minute, to ensure adequate sterilization by the final UV sterilization filter. If water pressure continues to be low after replacing the 30 micron and 1 micron filters, this filter should be replaced.
An important feature of this filter is to ensure there is no turbidity (cloudiness) of the water that passes through the germicidal ultraviolet (UVC) filter. For effective sterilization, the water that passes through the UV-C filter must be crystal clear. This filter, rated at .5 micron, ensures that the water entering the final UV-C filter will be properly sterilized. It is critical that the flow restricting component, which looks like a small round piece with a hole in the centre, is facing upwards when this filter is installed.
The two stages of this 2-in-1 filter include:
– Stage 3: Spun fiber for sediment removal down to .5 microns (microfiltration).
– Stage 4: Flow restricted powdered carbon filter that adsorbs (removes) heavy metals, chlorine, dissolved and particulate lead, mercury, trihalomethanes, VOCs, and reduces cryptosporidium, giardia, entamoeba and toxoplasma cysts by 99.95%, ensuring the water is crystal clear with no turbidity for effective UV sterilization.
STAGE 5: Germicidal UV-C Lamp
Horizontally-mounted on the top of the dual filter housing, the UV-C light kills bacteria, viruses, mold, algae, yeast, cysts, cryptosporidium, giardia, some volatile organic compounds and other biological contaminants. Unlike the chlorine used in municipal water supplies to kill microorganisms, UV-C does not introduce any potentially poisonous components into your drinking water, or adversely affect its taste or smell.
The CottagePure is designed to remove contaminants, kill microorganisms, and produce great tasting water, and unlike reverse osmosis and distillation, the CottagePure leaves dissolved minerals including calcium and magnesium in solution, creating a balanced, great tasting mineral water, with no effect on the pH of the water.
Designed to last a lifetime, the CottagePure system includes six extra filters (3 of each of the first two stages), all the required fittings and tubing, long reach faucet and filter wrench. While we cannot guarantee how long these filters will last, as the level of contaminants will vary from one water source to another, we estimate that this system should last a minimum of one year before additional filters are required. The ultraviolet lamp should be replaced after 12 months of use. OPUS recommends purchasing a complete CottagePure filter kit annually.
Note: OPUS recommends all plumbing products be installed by a professional licensed plumber. The CottagePure requires connection to an AC electrical outlet to power the germicidal UV-C sterilization component.
